Grease a 12 x 20 inch bake pan with butter. Cut bread slices
in half and brush on a light coating of melted butter. Arrange
bread, overlapping, in the bake pan.
Mix together eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt until well combined.
Gradually stir in the milk.
Pour the custard mixture over the bread in the pan.
Refrigerate for an hour or more so that the bread absorbs the
custard mixture. Lightly sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top.
Place the bake pan in a larger pan with about an inch of water
in it. Place in a preheated 350 degree oven for about an hour
or until set.
Serve hot or cold with whipped cream, ice cream or a light dusting
of confectioner's sugar.
For 10 Servings: Use 1 lb or less of bread, cut the ingredients
by half and use a lasagne dish instead.
